International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the strength that women have, reflect on our accomplishments and how we can further empower each other to reach our goals.
Fitness is an aspect of that empowerment. Women have made incredible strides in becoming stronger and making change. We can this with inspiring individuals in our lives or with fitness brands like Nike and Gymshark inspiring that change with their recent campaigns.
I personally have found that the common goal to become stronger, better individuals in the fitness community has especially inspired me to realize my strengths and feel empowered. Not only women, but men as well (equal opportunity!), should feel that way and here's how fitness can do that:
One of the most important things fitness has empowered me with is self-discipline. Achieving your goals, regardless of if they're fitness-related or not, takes major discipline. The natural progression and lifestyle changes that happen with working towards fitness goals pushes you to become a more disciplined individual. When you have too many commitments and you know you need to make it to the gym at the end of the day, that's when you really push yourself to manage time-management and mental strength that carry into your work, health, studying, and any other goals you have. Even after the hardest day, getting up and going to the gym because you KNOW you can, that is discipline. This has become one of my most invaluable skills, and even though I Still struggle at times, improving your discipline will honestly improve any other area in your life that you want to get better at.
Every time you make a choice to improve your health, increase your strength, or focus your mind, you empower yourself. You build a stronger body but also mentality as well. The intimidation of going to pick up some weights when a group of jacked individuals is surrounding the gym, fades because you become so self-aware of your abilities and knowledge about what you're doing. Just that knowledge that you are making a change to do something better for yourself, encourages you to push past your limits. That is a direct reflection of your self-confidence and will translate you to becoming a more confident individual in your life as well, because you KNOW you are capable of doing better.
3. Connecting like-minded Women
There's a quote you will often see on International Women's Day:
"Here's to Strong Women.
May we know them,
may we be them,
may we raise them."
This quote resonates with so many people because it is an understanding that representation and learning from other women is an important aspect of personal growth. Recognizing other individuals who push boundaries and inspire other while also living there best lives, and striving for their own personal progress. Yesterday I can't tell you how amazing it was scrolling down my social media feeds and just seeing so much positive from everyone. In the Fitness community, there is such a huge support of women recognizing other women for pushing themselves and encouraging them to reach their goals. Even if you convince a friend to go to the gym with you and accomplish that goal together, that in itself is such an empowering moment.
International Women's day is an important day to reflect on issues that impact women and health is important in that too. I hope you all acknowledge all the bad-ass things you do and encourage others to so well. Being empowered through good health enables many more positive changes in your life and hope this inspires a small change in yours!
